Advent Sunday Song: Remembering our Hope

Yesterday was the first Sunday in Advent, the Sunday celebrating hope. This first song, “ O Come O Come Emmanuel”, reminds me of how long Israel hoped for the promised Messiah. The chorus echoes the Bible’s exhortation to rejoice in hope: “Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to Thee, O Israel!” The second song, “What Child is This”, is a reminder that all of our hope in God’s promises are sure. We don’t hope in a wish, we hope in the certainty of God’s Word.
Christ came as promised in the past so that the “nails, spear, shall pierce him through. The cross be borne for me for you.” As promised in Isaiah. And so Christ will come, as promised, in the future to reign and put an end to all suffering, sin, and death. Jesus Christ is the best and the surest hope of all.
